The Impact of Advanced Footwear Technology on Amateur Runners

Advanced Footwear Technology (AFT) shoes are revolutionizing the running world. These performance-enhancing shoes combine lightweight, resilient midsole foams with rigid moderators and pronounced rocker profiles in the soles. But how do they affect amateur runners?

While AFT shoes can enhance performance, they also alter running techniques and may increase injury risk if not used properly. Amateur runners should introduce these shoes gradually to avoid potential injuries. But how do they affect amateur runners?

A recent pilot study explored the use of AFT shoes amongst 61 amateur runners . The study aimed to understand how these shoes influence running technique and the incidence of injuries.

Key Findings:

  • Usage Patterns: Most runners used AFT shoes once a week (67.8%) with some using them up to three times a week (27.1%)

  • Perceived Changes: 61.7% of runners noticed changes in their running technique, including greater forefoot support and higher calf muscle activation

  • Injury Incidence: 11.8% of runners reported injuries after using AFT shoes, highlighting the need for gradual introduction into training routines

In conclusion, whilst AFT shoes can enhance performance they also alter running techniques and may increase injury risk if not used properly. Amateur runners should introduce these shoes gradually to avoid potential injuries.
